Description
Émile; or, Treatise on Education was written and published shortly after The Social Contract. The work is essentially Jean-Jacques Rousseau's philosophy on education. Due in part to the controversial nature of the section on religion entitled, "Profession of Faith by the Savoyard Vicar," the book was banned and Rousseau forced to flee France for a time. Émile was even burned publicly the year it was published. In contrast to the reaction the book received, Rousseau considered it his best and most important work. Both a philosophical treatise and a novel written in the first person, Émile proposes a system of education that preserves the value of the individual within a corrupt society.
